So, there was some discussion on /m/ about a couple of lines that had rather varried translations from episode 8 of 00 and this one is still bugging me and the thread’s kind of dead and /m/’s not really the appropriate place to be asking questions about moon and I’m probably totally wrong but I wanna whine about it so… THATS WHAT A BLOG IS FOR right?

Anyhow, here’s the chunk in question:

Now the big issues is who 愚かな人間に is referencing. The consensus of the guys on /m/ seems to be that it’s a throw back to あの男に and ロックオン・ストラトスに (so it’s aimed at Lockon). But, (and I have no right to take this position given my extremely limited proficiency in the language) I’m still not convinced that it’s not targeted at Tieria. I can’t see how you can justify that it’s targeted at Lockon gramatically. The あの男に and ロックオン・ストラトスに are both related to 心を許しすぎた not the following line. The way I’m reading it 愚かな人間に is a right dislocated adverbial phrase–so if you put it back into the sentence it’d be: 

「計画遂行よりも　愚かな人間に　家族の　あだ討ちを　優先した」
(or any of the other valid positions since Japanese is largely free word order).

Which would translate to (literally): 
“Even above executing the plan  just like a foolish human  [your] “family”s  revenge  [you] prioritized.” 
(more refined and considering the original phrasing, something like: “You placed your “family”s revenge over executing the plan, just like a foolish human.”)

As opposed to the prevailing opinion (note that the last line is apparently targeted at Lockon according to the guys on /m/ despite how ambiguious it is in English too):
“You placed revenge for your ‘family’ above executing the plan. What a foolish man.”

At first I thought I was totally wrong because I couldn’t find に-as-an-adverb-marker in my grammar dictionary and generally don’t trust myself on stuff like this unless I can find it in a reliable grammar text especially when I’m going against the prevailing opinion (since I’m quite prone to mixing things up with other grammar points or stuff I only vaguely remember from Latin class). BUT I did find it just a minute ago and now I’m pretty convinced that I’m right since 愚かな人間 is a noun phrase and adding に to a noun makes it an adverb and it’s totally legal to right dislocate a phrase like that in casual speech. And again, I don’t see how that’d work as a stand-alone sentence fragment or working into the sentence as an indirect object or something. 

Anyhow, this wasn’t meant so much as a critique as an IS THIS RIGHT OR AM I FUCKING CRAZY? (and if I’m wrong someone please explain to me how the fuck that’s supposed to work because I’m obviously an idiot who just doesn’t get it) kind of thing (not that there’s anything wrong with critique, I just don’t think I’m qualified to be making that sort of critique at this stage–stupid shit like “human biolism” on the other hand is an entirely different story).
