Kouga Yun Design Works

Summary from the usual place. Nothing really spoilery or anything, mostly just design stuff.

Kouga Yun Design Works

The following are the bits the blogger thought were interesting from the commentary on the designs. I’m going to abbreviate even further–leaving out the bits that are just describing the images rather than information from the design commentary (i.e. the Setsuna section just says that there’s a design with him wearing a turban and a discarded design for civilian clothes, but that’s it)

Lockon

22-23

 - The discarded design looks a lot like Ribbons’ frilly outfit and he had short hair too.

Allelujah/Hallelujah

P24-25

 - Allelujah was treated like an animal while in the super soldier facility, and his heart was deeply wounded because of it. Even so he was still docile and obedient.

Tieria:

26-27

 - His image was a “mechanically powerful egghead, and electronic fairy”

 - They let [Kouga] style and dress him however she felt like.

Sumeragi

28-31

 - [Sumeragi] was designed with a purple NuBra. It makes an appearance in the rough.

Feldt, Chris

32-35

 - Chris has a shadowy past

 - In the early stages, Feldt had glasses.

 - Feldt doesn’t show much skin partly due to shyness and partly to give her the impression of a somewhat gloomy character.

Lichty, Lasse

36-37

 - Lasse has a perverted* side too, but he keeps it in control and shows his nice guy face to his comrades. (*google gives me ‘perverted’ for 屈折した even though literally the word is ‘bent’ I’m not quite sure if the implication of that is the same as in English though)

 - Lichty is the kind of character that acts cheerfully in order to forget his dark past.

The Trinity Siblings

38-39

 - Naturally, their names are all code names.

 - Johan is Mizushima gone mad (wut?), before he gave that suggestion, he wore proper, long pants, but his navel was [still] exposed.

Alejandro, Ribbons

40-41

 - Alejandro is of Latin descent.

Wang, Hong Long

42-47

 - It seems like there is probably some serious drama between these two

Ian, Aeolia

48-49

(really nothing worth translating directly, the blogger just kind of trails off and comments that Aeolia’s hair and face would have made for a fantastic villain–so I’m pretty sure those shots of the old dude with the weird, long, spiky hair was proto-Aeolia)

Graham, Billy

54-55

 - Initially, Graham was an ambitious person who has no qualms about betraying his comrades. And furthermore, [Graham and] Billy’s relationship was such that Billy was a nice guy who was just dragged into things.

 - Billy happened to pursue his studies so single-mindedly that he became divorced from love/emotions.

Kati, Patrick

56-57

- As for Kati, even as a superior officer and even as a woman, she is swayed by Patrick.

Sergei, Souma

58-59

 - Souma’s slim figure and hairstyle were Kouga’s idea.

Ali

60-61

 - Mizushima ordered that [Ali] “absolutely must have a beard, provided that if he were to shave it, he’d be a handsome man.”

Saji, Kinue

66-67

 - Originally, Kinue was supposed to dislike Louise a bit, but it didn’t turn out that way in the series.

Louise, Louise’s mother

68-69

 - Louise’s image was older sister/wife

The next bit is a talk between Kouga and Chiba.

72-77

 - Chiba and Kouga discuss whether they should give Allelujah['s design] nipples.

Chiba: “If I think I should draw it, could I draw it and will I draw it?”

 - Mizushima decided the character’s ethnic backgrounds.

 - For the most part, Mizushima was consulted on the characters’ color schemes. Kouga didn’t have a part in it. But Chiba participated.

 - Wang had the image of Lady Penelope the “Thunderbird” (?)

Chiba: “Marina’s unlucky quality gradually developed”

 - When Allelujah was all back, when he finally showed both eyes, Kouga wasn’t consulted. Because Chiba [only] saw that he had both eyes visible in the storyboard, you could say it was decided in the script [and not by the designers].

Chiba: “He looks better when his hair isn’t pulled back in the middle.”

Also, because it’s short:

300 Years Later

The blogger says there isn’t much new information (mostly world background)

But they do mention that the reason Lichty wore such a concealing bathing suit was to hide skin discoloration (presumably from his prostheses)

  1. >- His image was a “mechanically powerful egghead, and electronic fairy”

    That is so moe. Fuck.

  2. I know! I nearly fell out of my chair when I saw “electric fairy” the first time.

  3. >Johan is Mizushima gone mad (wut?), before he gave that suggestion, he wore proper, long pants, but his navel was [still] exposed.

In one of the December interviews, Chiba mentions Mizushima insisting on giving Johan short pants. He’d wanted one character with shorts, and decided that Johan was the “hotpants character”.

  4. >As for Kati, even as a superior officer and even as a woman, she is swayed by Patrick.

    W00t!

  5. Mizushima really makes me lol.

  6. purple NuBra
ffff so that’s the secret behind Sumeragi’s perfect cleavage

I swear Johan’s hotpants is Mizushima’s secret kink, of all the characters he could have slapped it on!

I adore Feldt’s old design, too bad it didn’t make it.

Mizushima ordered that [Ali] “absolutely must have a beard, provided that if he were to shave it, he’d be a handsome man.”
He’s right. Heck even with a stubble back in his jihad days Ali was a handsome man.

  7. >- Chiba and Kouga discuss whether they should give Allelujah['s design] nipples.

    >Chiba: “If I think I should draw it, could I draw it and will I draw it?”

My lips are quivering with laughter. And the electronic fairy part. FAIRY.
