Nostalgia Trip Update

I just finished Sailor Moon S, which puts me well over the half-way mark in my SM nostalgia marathon. The monster of the week shit gets really grating after a while, but it’s nice to have on in the background because you don’t have to pay too much attention to it to follow what’s going on. The audio/video quality of the files I’m watching is utter shit (though it does take me back to my VHS fansub-watchan’ days). Aside from the boring monster of the week episodes–now this might be the nostalgia goggles talking, but I think you have to be a massive faggot to hate this show (yeah, I’m looking at you #/m/, I dunno how you can like Kamen Rider but call Sailor Moon shit). Oddly enough, I find myself wanting more mid-season powerups (the inner senshi have had the same goddamn attacks for like 2.5 seasons now, I think I’ve seen the stock animation for those like 75 times each at least now D: ).

tbh now I’m kind of wanting a revival series. Something like 26 episodes, cut all the monster of the week/season shit and do a tighter storyline retelling the important plot points or whatever. But of course that’ll never happen :< (lol, last time I said that it was about more Slayers and we got stuck with fucking Pokota :| )

[EDIT] Started watching SuperS today, Moon Gorgeous Meditation is fucking badass looking (especially compared to the attacks from last season which were kind of retarded looking all-round imo). Also, I’m having a lot of fun throughout this rewatch since I keep seeing like, proto-Utena stuff here and there, which is really entertaining (this season in particular has a lot of that in it already and I’m just a few episodes in)

[EDIT II] Halfway through SuperS. Fisheye, you poor, flamboyant little man… ;~;

[EDIT III] Okay, so, my new favorite thing this season is all the Tuxedo-Mask-is-an-incompetent-retard gags. I don’t know why it amuses me so much, they’re not even that funny.

[EDIT IV] Started Stars today. I actually really liked the mini-arc at the beginning (for some reason, I seem to remember that plot taking longer… but then again it’s been like 10 years and I watched it in fragments on bootleg HK VHS tapes so I guess it’s to be expected). Also, I think “Starlight Honey Moon Therapy Kiss” takes the cake for most retarded sounding attack name (actually… is it supposed to be “Honeymoon”? Because it sounds slightly less retarded that way, lol fansubs)

[EDIT V] I take that back, “Star Gentle Uterus” is leagues more retarded than “Starlight Honeymoon Therapy Kiss.” Also, facepalming while knitting is a stupid, stupid idea.

[EDIT VI] Down to the last 6 episodes of Stars. Tuxedo Mask should have a “Sorry OP Only” sign pointing to him in the OP because he hasn’t appeared in a single episode this season :P I think I’ll manage to finish before class today.

[EDIT VII] Done. ;~;

  1. There was a revival series.

    Unfortunately it was Pretty Guardian Sailormoon, and down that road likes a special hell …

    • “lies”, even. Gah. *facepalms*

      • Oh lol, that’s right, they made that live action series. Haha…

        • Normally live action series based/adapted from Anime can be pretty bad (Great Teacher Onizuka come to mind) but the Sailor Moon live action series was actually pretty good In my opinion. The story was different and while I at first was really irritated that they had turned Luna into a plushie, the Tuxedo Mask of the live action series was interesting.

          …And then there was Princess Serenity ;) All the old Sailor Moon fans and little kids that liked the show probably had a shock.

          • Now I kind of want to watch it….

  2. I have 4 eps left of SailorStars! Someone had just uploaded a torrent with all seasons and i decided it’s a good opportunity to watch it again. It’s really annoying that they don’t have attack upgrades, sp i just skip the transformation and attack part in each episode. But other than this it’s a pretty cool anime! And even the whole repeating stuff in every episode is part of what makes it cult!!! So now i feel bad that it’s ending. I wish there were more episodes! Especially for the last season ( where the annoying-good-for-nothing-gay Mamo-chan doesn’t feature) XD
    I don’t know how the manga ends. I guess they didn’t make the anime to the end of the story?
    I even went hunting for fanart on Pixiv these days, but there is so little, and not so good on top of that! I used to draw a lot of Starlights-fanart 10 years ago…
    I want new stuff! Manga, anime or anything! Or else i’ll have to draw “The real story of SailorMoon” XD.

  3. I just found a better quality version of the last season. They have started to upload a DVD Rip in june.
    I saw the manga too and it’s so terrible that i want to forget it! They actually did a great job with this anime when you consider where it came from.
    About the attack names- i don’t think that when japanese people put some words together they come up with the same meaning that this combination has for western people, right?

    • Yeah, I watched the DVD rips for the first chunk of Stars and the difference in quality is astounding. I haven’t read the manga yet so I can’t really comment.

      As for attack names, Engrish is …odd. Some stuff makes more sense if you think about it in terms of Japanese grammar and phrasing, but generally attack names are just a mishmash of stuff that sounds cool and conveys the basic theme of whatever the attack is.

  4. I guess the reason why the anime was never all that liked might have been because the manga was far better?

    But rewatching the show the main thing I don’t like about Sailor Moon (the Anime especially) is that death is cheap as far as the protagonists go. Getting revived all the time it makes each season very repetitive.
    Of course since the show is/was aimed mainly at 11-12 year olds the revival part wouldn’t have been that much of a problem if there had only been one season.

    Still, the music is very catchy and is very good at lifting your spirits I think.

  5. go check my blog (in case you aren’t obsessively checking it every 5 minutes, as i’m sure you are, since it’s soooo interesting :P)

  6. I want a revival series too ;_;

    But 26 episodes would be far too short; it will take at least 50 for complete coverage of the 4 (or was it 5?) story arcs.

    • But there was never really any need to do more than one arc. Originally Sailor Moon was supposed to have ended after Queen Beryl and Metalia were defeated. But since it became so popular they ordered the manga-ka to continue the series. Well, that’s at least what I’ve heard.
