00 S1 Novel 1 Epilogue

Original text: [scans]

It doesn’t seem like very much was lost in the translation of the Chinese translation that’s been around for a while, but there were a couple of little things (punny things mainly) that obviously didn’t carry. I suspect we’ll see something similar to this in SE I. It’s kind of sad that these three short pages constitute like 90% of Ribbons’ character development and it wasn’t even included in the series proper.

Epilogue

That boy was connected to the world.
He was linked to every single piece of information, not just on Earth, but all the way to the Orbital Elevators… Space Colonies.
The information is designated into ranks by level.
In the highest of the seven ranks, “Level 7,” that plan, and the data necessary for it were being studied.
A boy was examining each and every detail of the plan.
And he lamented.
“They’re foolish.”
“Why are these things called ‘people’ so foolish?”
Looking at his beautiful figure in the mirror, the boy sighs.
“Why was I made in the image of these foolish creatures?”
“Something about me seems unsightly.”
“It’s all for humanity’s sake.”
“I even detest my own raison d’etre.”

“This is a contradiction.”
“My existence is contradictory.”
“If that’s the case, the contradiction must be corrected.”
“I have no choice but to fight with the strongest spear and the strongest shield.”*
“That’s it, I ought to obtain both of them.”
It was simple logic.
“The spear called “Gundam” and the shield called “Veda” must fight.”**
“With those two things, world where the contradictions have been righted will be constructed.”
“And I have the ability to obtain that power.”
The boy thought, looking at the battlefield spread out under his eyes–––that ruined town.
[It was full of the] wreckage of the old generation of mobile suits that were powered primarily by fossil fuels.
[Some] information was displayed on the console before the boy.
It was displaying the only remaining survivor on the battlefield.
A child, standing in a daze, holding a rifle at the ready, was displayed on the main monitor.

“He’s looking at me, no, this machine.”
The child’s eyes were brimming with some kind of awe and worship.
The elimination of all human life on the battlefield was part of the mission he was given.
But, the boy overlooked the child and withdrew from the battlefield.
He did that on a whim, out of compassion for the one who worshipped him.
“That’s it.”
“I’m a god to you.”
“That’s what it is, isn’t it?”
“Because I’m so incomprehensibly superior to you.”
The boy who saw the child’s pure eyes, felt like he understood how he ought to be.
Delight and ecstasy boiled up inside him.
The boy laughed.
It was the scorn of something inhuman.

Notes:
General: There are no explicit quotation marks in the original text to differentiate the monologue from the 3rd person narration, so there are some points where I could have (and probably did) misread something into first person.
* he’s making a pun here, 矛盾 is ‘contradiction’ and ’spear’ and ’shield’ are 矛 and 盾 respectively
**情報, ‘information’ is glossed as “Veda” here; also it sounds really weird but unless が is doing something weird I’ve never heard of before the spear and shield are the things doing the fighting (like, as far as I can tell it’s not ‘fight with the sword and shield’)

  1. This is the epilogue?
I thought this is the opening.
    Nice to read.

    • Yeah, it’s a retelling of the opening scene from Ribbons’ POV.
