S2 Novel 3 MSC Excerpt #2

Original text [scans]

Another Hiling related excerpt. I forget what episode this is from, but it’s after the first Memento Mori was destroyed and Nena comes in and saves Setsuna and is creepy. Anyhow! In this section: Having had her ass handed to her by the 00, Hiling fears the impending laughter of her comrades in the face of her failure. Poor Hiling.

[EDIT] This is at the end of episode 13 (the last novel 3 excerpt was at the beginning of the episode), BD rips just finished downloading so I went and checked. Most of the actual dialogue matches up with the episode (there are a few extra lines in the novel and of course we’re seeing all this from Hiling’s POV rather than Setsuna/neutral so more internal stuff).

[EDIT II] S2 Novel 4 was finally announced. It’s titled “Anew Return” and should be out at the end of the month. Sunrise, you’re making it really hard for me to pretend Anew doesn’t exist. Also NT/Animedia/mage usually leak today/tomorrow-ish.

221
The satellite weapon, Memento Mori, was destroyed, and the one who was the most shocked might have been the Innovator Hiling Care.
The Memento Mori was something that Ribbons convinced Alejandro Corner to build and then lent out to the A-LAWS for Aeolia’s plan.
Nevertheless, although it didn’t happen in front of Hiling’s eyes, it was destroyed in the same sector of space.
Furthermore, [it was destroyed] by Celestial Being as usual!
Whether the main cause of the result was underestimating Celestial Being’s war potential, overestimating the A-LAWS, or perhaps Hiling’s own negligence didn’t change the fact that the satellite weapon she was supposed to protect had been destroyed.
In the first place, Hiling was dispatched to the A-LAWS to capture the 00.
It wasn’t necessary for her to follow the A-LAWS’ strategy, but that the satellite weapon [which was designed to] advance Aeolia’s plan was destroyed on her first sortie, and that she gave a victory to Celestial Being that she was supposed to destroy, severely wounded Hiling’s pride.

222
Hiling had laughed at Revive and Bring when their machines were destroyed by the 00 at Lagrange 3, but she couldn’t bear thinking about being given a taste of her own medicine.
Ribbons is kind, so he’ll forgive me.
But, if that scornful[1] Regene Regetta were to find out, he’ll undoubtedly sting me with a mocking glance fired from his red eyes.
I can’t even bear to imagine that kind of scene without being able to check the torrent of anger surging up in my body.
I have so many “why’s.”
Why––did it end up this way?
Why––must I taste such disgrace?
Why––won’t those stupid humans move according our[2] wishes!?
Moreover, did the blue and white machine that destroyed the GN Megalauncher and gave me such unpleasant feelings receive a withdrawal signal or something? It’s almost like it’s business here was done and so it left.
And inspiring this feeling in me––!

“How dare you!”
Hiling chased after the Gundam in the Gadessa, with a GN Beam Sabre in the right hand and firing the GN Vulcan from the left wrist.

223
I’ll fucking kill you!
Hiling’s orders were to capture the 00, but there was no mention of the taking the pilot alive.
In other words, it’s fine as long as the two original solar furnaces and the system survive, right?
I’ll grind the rest into a pulp!

But, suddenly an electric warning sound rang out and that murderous blade thinned out.
And the machine was forced to retreat promptly.
Just across [from her], from over head aimed below [her] feet, a red particle beam flew by.
But it wasn’t just one or two shots.
Red particle beams rained down as if [the shooter] were aiming blindly. Hiling turned the Gadessa around bit by bit and doged it.
“What is this, reinforcements!?”
Hiling looked up to the source of the particle beams.
It wasn’t the O Raiser that docks with the 00, or any Innovator [developed] machine.
So that means…

224
They have another support unit like that!?
Hiling thought that was a natural thing to suspect, but that digression made a little chink inside her [3]
When Hiling looked over her shoulder, [she saw] the 00 with the GN Sword raised over its head drawing near.
Were it not for [her] Innovator reflexes and the Gadessa’s capabilities, she would have lost her life to that killer blow from above.
But you couldn’t say she got out unscathed.
A fierce shock ran through the cockpit, and [the Gadessa's] right arm[4] was sliced off at the shoulder.
“Shit!”
Hiling immediately rearranged Gadessa’s stance. She was prepared for the danger of being pursued.
But, without attacking the damaged Gadessa, the blue and white Gundam flew off just like that, without even a second look.
That act made Hiling furious.
Are you trying to say that having lost one arm the Gadessa isn’t even worth defeating?
And [me], the Innovator, Hiling Care? [5]
Are you pitying me as if I were a HUMAN Gundam Meister…!?

“Gundammmm!”

225
She gnashed her teeth so hard the muscles of her face hurt, and until the pale blue GN particles dissolved into space, Hiling stared at the 00’s far off back.

Notes:
Internal monologue in italics again.

[1]- 冷笑癖のあるリジェネ・レジェッタなど: Two things, first the relative clause–it’s literally something like “who has a habit of scornful/derisive laughter” but that sounds dumb in English so I shortened it (basically, Regene’s a douchebag). The second thing being the など at the end of Regene’s name, normally that’d be like “Regene and the others” (implying at least one other person who’s not being explicitly named), but the pronoun in the next clause is singular (should be 彼ら or something if it’s meant to be expressly plural). Anyway, I’m just leaving it singular but Revive/Bring/any other Innovator with red eyes could be implicated in this line along with Regene.
[2]- 導手たるイノベイター: Another relative clause that doesn’t really fit well. Literally it’s something like “the guiding Innovators.”
[3]- 彼女の中にわずかな隙を作った: Badly phrased in English, what I ended up putting is pretty much the literal reading. I get what it’s saying but a better phrasing escapes me for the moment.
[4]- 右肩から先が斬り離される: Lit. “from the shoulder to the end was sliced off”
[5]- This isn’t phrased well in English, but I’m pretty sure this connects to the line before it (like, she’s reiterating the line implicitly with her as the subject rather than the Gadessa). Hiling implicates herself in the former line with ガデッサなど but it doesn’t carry well (or at least I can’t render it well enough to get that across without making this line not make sense).

  1. More Hiling Care.

    I’m starting to like her(better)!
